Umm... No. How many SBC Championships does he have? How many NCAA appearances has he had?
He has a combined 22-60 record against MTSU, WKU, UNT, and Denver (albeit Denver is now gone). He only has winning records against UALR, FAU, ULL, ULM and Troy, the weak part of our conference (excepting UALR who is now good). I respect Pietri but do we really think he could win with the men? I don't think he has ever beaten MTSU's current coach, Rick Insell. We can't win our division or conference until we can beat him!
Pretty sure I heard a prominent member of this board on WNSP today talk about Bruce Pearl.
also - Mike Davis?
You are trying to make me retch, aren't you?
Bruce Pearl-bring him on
Mike Davis-no thanks. He can stay in whatever hole he has created now.
Class of '14. Go Jags! South in your Mouth!
I'm surprised that you think Pearl is a good idea and Mike Davis is not.
Davis is a state guy who was a star at Alabama (ahem, ticket sales) and took his UAB team to 4 post-season tourneys out of his 6 seasons at UAB, and 5 tourneys out of his 6 years at Indiana.
Pearl has gotten into a lot of trouble over the years - while he's a heckuva coach, I'm sure the moral majority would not be cool with him in the program.
I would want Pearl strictly for the name and for his coaching. Maybe he could throw us all a BBQ every now and then.
This. Don't care about past transgressions, as long as it wasn't felonius. Bring him in, explain how it's gonna be, and he either loves it or hates it. I'd bet he's itching to get back in the game.
Today I’ll take any kind of passion. Just care! Complain, moan, groan, or call for somebody’s head. CARE !! - OJ
I don't think a coach will effect ticket sales that much unless you are talking an elite coach which will not happen..I would like to see a guy come in thats understands how to coach at the mid-major level..The key to getting crowds to the Mitch is schedule not the coach..Even if we win big,a bad schedule will not maximize our crowds..I am not sure whether it was CRA or the administration that made the decision of one for one contracts with teams..Back in the day we had 2 for 1 with Kansas,Ohio St, and Louisville to name a few..This is what I think we must do again to get people to games..Mobile is not a big basketball city..Name teams is what it takes to get peoples attention..If we can get a big name in with a 2 for 1 and play well against them, thats what will get more people to come out when we play the ULM's of the world..
JCLJAG, with all due respect, getting great teams to play USA in Mobile is a lot harder than it used to be. The dynamics of the entire NCAA have changed. If you know how to get those teams to play USA in Mobile then I'm sure Joel Erdmann has a spot for you on staff. I think using those comparisons from the past are not that fair to make.
A few years ago CRA tried to set up a 2-1 with NC State and didn't want a cheap buyout for the game in Mobile. NC State refused to sign which tells you they had no intention of repaying the two games in Raleigh. When CRA was at TAMU-CC he had the same thing happen with TAMU. Bigger schools just want home games and they'll pay a little to not have to go to a smaller team's court.
For better or worse, DJE has made it clear that he will not accept coaches (or players) with a questionable past. I think we'll get Jeff Price or a likely first-time head coach.
Wins, wins, and more wins are the only thing that gets B I S.
"Faster horses, Younger women, Older whiskey, More money"
I am sure ADJE has a list. The issue for every coaching replacement sport at USA is money. We can not pay what many big time assistants are making in their current jobs.
I as an OLD Jaguar have seen many sunrises and have learned to be careful what I wish for. Once I watched a game where the grumpy old CRA was contrasted with the a young dynamic players coach from another school. On that day I wished we had a more savvy player oriented coach. Then 3 weeks later the young coach was caught in the act-in a car- in the athletic department parking lot of his school with a senior female swimmer. His whole team really liked his wife and kids and turned on him.
I considered John Pelphrey a friend but when he departed USA we were crippled with lost scholarships due to APR problems. He left Arkansas in the same position.
IN this world every hire is a crap shoot. We can not afford an iron clad sure thing.
Jeff Price has very few personal interaction characteristics in common with CRA. And he is a proven winner. And he is a pretty smart guy living in this century. Is he THE guy? I do not know, but we have the luxury of an audition which we will not get with other applicants. If he generates wins and leads us to the promise land then I say we keep him. IF not ...NEXT!
I did a little research and while these teams are not the elite teams in basketball I still think they have name recognition..Here are some named teams that traveled to lesser teams this year..
Cincinnati @ Marshall
Purdue @ Eastern mIchigan
Clemson @ Furman and @ College of Charleston
Miami @ UCF @ Florida Gulfcoast
Wake @ Richmond @ UNC Greensboro
Kansas St @ George Washington
Oklahoma @ Texas Arlington
Louisville @ Charleston
St.Johns @ Murray St
I think if some of these guys can get these games,we can..Like I said it may not be Duke or Indiana, but their are some pretty attractive teams that went on the road this year..It is not alot of them and I don't know the reasons why they traveled..
Why did Price leave West Virginia Wesleyan after just one season? Even though they are D-II, seems strange that he would leave a HC position (where he successfully went to the postseason) for an "associate head coach" position under his old boss, unless the plan all along was to pass the torch?
I'm pretty sure he's making significantly more money as an assistant at USA than as a head coach at WVW. And I believe he really wanted to get back to D1 ball, even as an assistant.
According to the al.com article, he came here to try to take over at USA when RA retired.
I'd say most of those are on par with LSU coming here last year.
Everybody's got an opinion, right? So, here's mine...
1) We already have tried to go with a coach that absolutely no other school was chasing; he just "retired" somewhere around his 30th year at South(oops, maybe 6th, just seems like 30), with one trip to the dance, with Pelphrey's players. So, nah, no thanks to Price.
2) I can't imagine a serious mid-major even thinking about keeping their current assistants as a top 20 factor in their decision of who to hire for their next coach. Much less a program that has lost its winning ways.
3) JCLJag, I love the idea of Matt Graves! Let's get a hot assistant. I don't care if he leaves in three or four years; it just means he has been successful. We are not going to be a program of destination for a GOOD coach for some time. Keep bringing in those hot assistants. See Xavier, Dayton, VCU, etc...
4) I get the concern about Pearl. But the question really is, whether it is systemic (see Bobby Petrino) or whether he can keep him and his team out of the ditch. NO to Davis; if I wasn't clear NO WAY to Davis. I certainly don't want a uab retread.

Let's stop with anymore Bruce Pearl talk. He has a show-cause judgement against him and he is not allowed to recruit student athletes until August of 2014.
Joel Erdmann is going nowhere near him, nor should he.

good information! Thanks!
That's a new one to me. Fair enough, moving on to more realistic choices.
I don't think he's head coach material but local hero Antonio Lang would be a good idea as an assistant.
Hey guys, I was totally kidding about Bruce Pearl. I wouldn't touch him with a 10 foot pole. Helluva coach though. Total slime ball, but one helluva basketball coach.
