All of this talk about expansion and such has me wondering. What schools would be a good fit for the Sun Belt? Seems to me Georgia Southern, Appalachian State, Sam Houston State and Jacksonville State would all be good fits. I don't know about all the stadium issues and other red tape. I just mean from a competitive standpoint and improving the football landscape.
Were you over on SBCBBS? They were talking about ASU, ULL and WKU possibly fillling some spots in C-USA if teams bolt for the BE.

No. Didn't see that...
Playing these teams would be a step down. I'd like to be in a conference with name schools who have some tradition in D1.
I may have said this before and it was not recieved to well...but it is bad when South is not even mentioned in conversations such as the one above..So essentially it puts us with the Georgia Southerns and Jack States
Well I look at Conference USA and that doesn't seem like much of a step up really. Most of those teams aren't tradition-rich programs. What is your ideal conference affiliation for South?
One without App State, Jax State, Georgia State, Georgia Southern, Texas San Antonio and other lower tier schools. I just think it's a big step down and none of these teams excite me
I'd like to join Tulane, Southern Miss, Rice, Tulsa, Central Florida, Memphis, La Tech, New Mexico State, etc.
This would be C-USA and they don't want us. If we are destined to be in the Sun Belt in the near future, we better hope the number one issue of the commissioner is to provide stability for the conference. If the conference folds and we are left out in the cold (I.e. New Mexico State and Idaho) we will be in serious trouble. At this point, we need the Sun Belt as much as the Sun Belt needs us.

I am with you on this. We need the Sunbelt. No one is knocking on our door to move up so we need to make the best of the conference that we are in. Make sure that it remains viable for the near future.
Hate to say it, but at the moment in our football history, we don't even meet these qualifications.......If we are not being asked or if we are being rejected when we 'inquire' about conference membership, then we must help strengthen our future chances by dominating the SBC no matter who our conference mates are. We've set the mark high on our OOC schedule. Make a couple of upsets there and take care of the SBC and the invites will come.
IT'S OUR TIME! GO JAGS!!
This is how Boise did it!
Pretty much. Without that, Boise isn't even an after thought.
After all, they were a community college until the 1960s.
If WKU, ULL, and ASU are asked to join CUSA I'll puke, but it would most likely mean USM, Tulsa, and UTEP are gone. If there is a silver lining, it would mean that the school most likely to block our move (USM) would be gone when and if there's another opening. By then it'd be like rejoining the Sun Belt, but it would be better that what we're left with.
So why has everyone here decided we're not being considered as a move-up? Because there isn't chatter on internet forums? Please. South has plenty of tradition in Basketball and Baseball, the facilities for both are as good or better than most. Our market size is better than most. Some of the new CUSA schools have never played a down of FBS football. Anyone who thinks we can't compete with USM, Tulane, UAB, or any team mentioned by MobileBama1 needs to take a closer look. And we can win in every sport. Academics are on par. Our endowment is huge. Personaly I'll be disappointed if we're playing the SHSU's and JSU's of the world in three years. That's not our peer group, but unfortunately that is how we will be viewed if they move up.
I'm sure the schools within 200 miles of us will never vote to allow us in their conference, because they know they will lose the only recruiting advantage they have (or perceived advantage) but it may not be up to them if enough other presidents can go to bat for us. They would rather see us move up instead of a school in their backyard.
I haven't given up on the SunBelt as it exists today, just afraid of where realignment may take us.
Awesome post up vote for ya

Do you think Independence is the only way? I would rather be independent than play up and coming division 1-AA teams or FCS which ever you prefer. How stupid does it seem that our administration declined an invitation to the C-USA when it was first being put together.
They did? Why would they do that..just curious
The story goes that Joe Gottfried was about to get on a plane and Whiddon called him and said no.
That makes no sense C-Usa isn't a bad conference
Many things Pres Whiddon did made no sense.
Horizontally enhanced, vertically challenged, follically impaired...
I totally agree with you about it not making sense but that is the story I have from a couple of different sources on this board and discussion on the older boards we once were on.
C-USA was even better then , no one really knows what Pres. Whiddon was doing but it happened.

I had put something similar on the SBC board earlier today and this was a response of ArkStFan, a guy who has real, firsthand knowledge of how the conferences work - the SBC in particular.
I don't know the source of it, but I've repeatedly heard the claim USM would never affiliate with Troy. USA I've never heard that about and last time I checked they are in the home of a well run bowl game that is among the best regarded for how it treats players, coaches wives, and fans.
I think any assumption that USA wouldn't be in the hunt is ill-founded given that CUSA is losing its top bowl.
I think is in line with what the school of thought is on USA.
Mobile is the 61st market, just 2 behind New Orleans.
The GoDaddy.com and Senior Bowls are both successful and profitable. Something many bowls are not.
The NFL infusion, in terms of the Senior Bowl.
Tradition rich in basketball and baseball.
A student body size that is in line with some of the CUSA schools.
I really think USA is on the list of the next set of schools to get the call.
I do see the Sun Belt football conference living on borrowed time, in any event.
Yeah Sun Belt and Big East are the two that will prob be gone
Yeah, and that's where I thought we were eventually headed. I'm not liking the idea of being left behind.
The best thing South can do right now is to WIN, in all sports, but especially in football. If we can do this consistently, that will draw attention to the school and make us more attractive. Attendance goes a long way as well. We need more BIS! If our teams win consistently and attendance increases, that will give DJE some cards to play and I trust him to steer us in the right direction. The sooner the better.
