What I've heard is that it is against conference by-laws to actively contact another conference to try and get an invitation.
That means that whether our administration is being active or not will stay top secret.
Of course, a newcomer to the conference like Benson who has only experienced 1 season of football and nothing else wouldn't know any better, unless he did his homework. How much is he getting paid again?
A lot. I think it's lawyer-level money.
On this topic, the next time a USA student or Mobile area resident says something about how they don't come to USA games because they don't know or respect the opponent, you should strongly consider punching them in the mouth.
If we had put up good attendance numbers in football (say 25,000+ per game), I have no doubt we would have been strongly considered for an invitation to change conferences. These folks that won't come to support the team are a big reason we aren't bringing in more recognizable conference opponents.
I think I can use that to kinda fuel folks. One of the top complaints I hear is "We're playing nobody's"
Class of '14. Go Jags! South in your Mouth!
Interesting. So did MTSU get any kind of penalty for sending CUSA a freakin power point on why they are such a great fit for CUSA? If not, by laws be damned.
Hahaha... this made me laugh. These days, with baby lawyers like me, you have to specify what you mean by this. "Lawyer-level money" to me means "not quite enough money to service the enormous debt you took on to become a lawyer."
Hey, C-USA could have taken Troy, which has no market and the Commish still would not have thought to mention that we are a charter member of the Belt. Just sayin
While the Sun Belt was good for us as a non-football school, times have changed. The Belt as a D-1 football league is doomed and we need to start making plans for ourselves. Benson is only going to rearrange the deck chairs, if we wait for him to come up with a plan we're toast.
Penalties or not we need to find a new home in an existing conf. or get together with others and form a new one.
After waiting this long we don't deserve to be left with no option but FCS.
Or maybe Benson knows that USA is packing their bags.
I do think that conference realignment may encourage our administration to announce the OCS timetable. See Tulane

I agree with StillGotit! Keep hope alive!
You'd probably have to get permission to form a new conference, so inviting move-ups would be our only option. I hope like Hades that we as an entity are doing some proactive thinking behind the curtains in case more of our buddies jump ship. I'd hate to be left without a chair when this is over.
The first thought in my head when he left us out of the core group was "hmmm" too, but I don't think we'll go anywhere before WKU.

It has nothing to do with waiting. They just don't want us. We'll have to live with that and make the best of it.
"The albatross and the whales, they are my brothers."---The Little River Band
How plausible is FBS independence in our region? I know USM was independent for a little. Just weighing all our options.
I really don't want that. We'd lose what little tv we have.
We may not have a choice in the matter in a few years. Either go indy or go FCS.
I think what Doug is trying to say is that Mr. Benson is starving and deeply in debt. At least, that's the lawyer-level money I'm aware of, unless you're 60 and silver-haired and have been practicing longer than I've been alive.
Conceivably, you're right. And it may be for a ton of reasons that USA has NO control over or power to change whatsoever.
Mobile might be the 61st TV market in the nation, BUT
it doesn't have the greatest rep for a ton of other reasons, mainly that it continues to reel from the 1970s and 1980s corruption that led to it being blackballed for concert tours and entertainment tours, through most of the late 1980s and all of the 1990s into the 2000s.
It suffers from not being Birmingham, or New Orleans, or Atlanta, or any other southern metro area.
I think Mobile is a sleeping giant. I think it has tons of potential. USA accounts for quite a bit of that potential that I see.
As it stands right now, I don't see Arkansas State, ULM or Troy getting an invite. Schools aren't big enough, alumni deep enough, attraction level high enough, nor athletic history grand enough. Plus, those markets aren't going to cut it.
ULL, Texas State, Georgia State could, in reality, all be gone tomorrow.
That leaves us. We're in between those sets of schools. Not sure how this ends.
I do NOT see FCS being an option that the AD or the current administration would entertain. If they do, we're toast.
Independent FBS status is asking for us to be a slaughterhouse school for everyone else. Can't see that either.
I don't think it would be crazy to hear from the MAC or MWC at this point. Anyone, hello? Beuller?
If the NCAA re-implements the FCS move up moratorium, the SBC will go away and we will have no choice but to go independant or FCS. I don't see being independant in the short term as a bad thing. We would easily make up any lost tv revenue with pay day games. Olympic sports would probably suffer. But then again the SBC may go back to a non football conference.
Way too many options to figure it all out now. We'll just have ride it out and hope our admin is working hard at doing whats best for USA and not the SBC.
I've watched a LOT of television, boys. Unless you're telling me that LA Law was lying I know you guys are rolling in that sweet litigious cash.
Correct me if I'm wrong, but I'm pretty sure one extra payday game will actually give us more money than the Belt TV deal currently does.
We haven't played a single payday game yet, either, I think. NCstate and MSU were both 2 for 1's with a diminished paycheck. Tenner is our first pay2lose game.
If we could fill out our schedule with some home and home agreements, independence wouldn't be so bad.
We're not going independent and there's no way to horn in on another conference unless they want us. Forming another conference doesn't make sense because we would lose all the auto bids for our other sports.
All we can do is keep improving our product and hope that either elevates the Sun Belt or gets USA into another conference.
BTW, T-Jag, I've been thinking the same thing. While USA is attached to the Mobile market, there's no reason that market can't grow. In my opinion, the biggest thing stopping Mobile from growing rapidly and increasing it's market size is the state of the educational system in Alabama. If the state, and Mobile in particular, could find a way to get the local schools to a more respectable level, you;d have more companies looking to relocate their. Upper-level management are not going to move their families to a place where the kids aren't receiving a top-notch education.
Improve the schools, get aggressive about recruiting more businesses, improve the infrastructure in the area and Mobile could easily get into the 50's in market share, maybe even the 40s.
You would need a home for all the other sports, which would mean going to an even lower conference. Plus, scheduling games as an independent is rough. You would have a hard time meeting the NCAA 5 home game rule.
Independence just seems like a stark existence.
Here are your other independents currently:
Army - it's a service academy. Their alumni base is astronomical.
Navy - same thing. Plus, they are quitting the independent status.
Notre Dame - Needs the NCAA less than the NCAA needs it. They do just fine with independence.
BYU - Independent one year. Quitting independence the next.
Put USA on that list and man, does it look lonely.
I'm being very serious when I say I wish the MAC would pick up the phone and call us. It's not that crazy. Rivalries would be nil, but it's better than nothing. Plus, that conference's members love traveling to Mobile for the GMAC/GoDaddy Bowl, and travel well.
CUSA is the best fit for us NOW, but they just don't want or need us.
MWC? It's a stretch, but it's better than what's staring at us.
A Sun Belt filled with up to 5 new members who just now came into existence or are career FCS teams is not the answer. If this were the Premier League in soccer, the Sun Belt would be League "B".
We've got a fair basketball history for the time we've existed. Can't the Big East throw us a bone. (or invite)
