There's a couple of threads out there dealing with the conference shifting...figured we'd roll up under one roof.
ALL HAIL THE SUNBEAST CONFERENCE
This post was edited by beefsiym 17 months ago
So now the word is that NMSU and WKU are joining CUSA. The belt is done and we never even got a chance to get started.
The Big East now has 13 current/future football members (by 2015 when Navy becomes the 13th). : Cinci, UConn, USF, Temple, UCF, Hou, Memph, SMU, Tulane, BSU, Navy, SDSU, ECU
If Notre Dame would just become a full member of the Big East, they would be at 14, which seems to be the current sexy target #.
C-USA also has 13 (by 2014 when FAU joins): UAB, Marshall, USM, Rice, UTEP, Tulsa, Charlotte, FIU, LaTech, UNT, ODU, UTSA, FAU.
It is entirely plausible that each of them will try to poach another SBC team, which would leave the Sun Belt with only 6 teams: [8 current/future members: USA, Troy, WKU, stAte, Ohh-La-La, ULM, GaSt, Tx St]
If the goal of these conferences is 16, so that they become "super conferences," then C-USA, Big East, and SEC may each make moves that ultimately destroy the Sub Belt, but lands USA in 1 of those 3 conferences (most likely CUSA).

Hey, it's only one radio station reporting it so far as I know, but it's probably true seeing what all else is going down. At least we have ASU and Ulala still in the conference.
Multiple tweets coming out now about WKU & NMSU both going to C-USA, but others saying C-USA is stopping at 14 and only adding those 2 if BigEast poaches 2 more (which could happen after the ACC takes 2 more from Big East).
The latest and best tweets on wku. Read what people are saying and join the conversation.

Sorry, had to drive home. I saw it on the Belt board were the rest of the defections were posted before they became official.
I hate this crap. Screw you Texas.
Today I’ll take any kind of passion. Just care! Complain, moan, groan, or call for somebody’s head. CARE !! - OJ
Please dont let this be true. This is the worst day ever for South Alabama football!
I don't accept twitter as a proper source yet. I don't see a peep about WKU or NMSU on reddit
I wonder if our commissioner saw this coming and is ready to react to this upheaval?
Our commissioner presided over the death of the WAC and doesn't appear to have learned anything from that debacle.
Sorry for being such a downer but I'm not seeing any good in what's going on.
It good for everyone except the ones being left behind in the belt.
I think we began football 3 years late at USA.
When we started is irrelevant. UNCC got in and never played a single down of football. They just don't want us.
I've been reading some of the posts on the CUSA board, and they're still thinking that there still may be some more defections coming. UTSA, UTEP, and Tulsa to the MWC? Rice too? At least geographically that makes sense, but some think USM might be looking west too. There's probably still another major shift coming...it's nuts. And then, how long do you think it will take BSU, SMU, and SDSU to tire of the craziness of being a part of a conference a continent away? This could keep going for many more months. Buckle the seat belt.
When the program started is only irrelevant to UNCC because their market was always desirable. USA needs time to improve their product to overcome a medium sized market.
It looks like WKU and NMSU are not going anywhere yet.
Rumors say they are the next two up if CUSA needs more teams.
Given what has happened in the belt this week, what is the chance Gus Malzhan stays put at ArkSt?
Have you heard anything regarding our administration's actions during realignment? Last I heard, DJE inferred on a radio show that we weren't actively pursuing an invite, just trying to make ourselves better so we become an attractive option.
Does Benson need to come out and make a statement stating that the Sun Belt is working...
Interview this morning with Karl Benson on 103.7 The Game
MTSU & FAU will announce today.
WKU is only a rumor. "[WKU] Has not had any contact with C-USA regarding future membership"
"We are putting together an aggressive plan. "
"Core membership remains intact (UL, ULM, WKU, Troy) + strong additions (Ga St & TX St)"
We "won't have a knee-jerk reaction" - will be planned and well thought out
Exit penalties exist, but Karl wouldn't get into specifics. "will be enforced"
"There were other schools last spring that made application or inquired about SB membership" - wouldn't get specific
Will have our own press conference "in the next few weeks" to announce our additions.
On whether the SBC is looking West or staying in the region:
"Our goal / one of our strong assets is our regional footprint... How far can it be stretched where it still maintains that? There are def teams that are within our footprint."
Any FCS schools involved to move up?
"Yes, that's the natural progression..."
"I knew back in March that changes were in store, and I acted quickly after NT/FIU... will react again."
This really pissed me off, btw...
USA is THE core of this conference.
Well, that certainly answers the question on if we stand pat.
I guess they need to elevate some FCS teams if for no other reason than they could slap a moratorium on move ups again and the SBC would be extremely vulnerable.
