South Alabama searched from coast-to-coast for a player that could put heat on the passer this offseason and struck gold in California. Akeem Lewis of Los Angeles Harbor Community College committed to the Jags on Thursday night.
Lewis, who had nine sacks and 17.5 tackles for a loss as a sophomore, visited Mobile in early December but since then had seen his recruiting heat up, with schools like Michigan, Illinois and Houston all showing serious interest. One factor was strongest for Lewis when picking USA.
"Well, I'm from Louisiana, so it would be close to home," he said. "My mom could come see me play, so it's just the best fit for me right now. Just getting closer to home."
Lewis has been told by the Jaguar coaching staff that they will make use of his quick burst as a Jack linebacker, or standup defensive end. An influx of junior college talent added to a veteran core should give new USA defensive coordinator plenty of tools to make like challenging for opposing teams.
Signing Day is February 6th.
